Auditory-visual speech perception development in Japanese and English speakers

چکیده
Development of auditory-visual speech perception was investigated in a cross-linguistic developmental framework, using the McGurk effect. Stimuli consisting of /ba/, /da/, and /ga/ utterances were presented to participants who were asked to make syllable identifications on audiovisual (congruent and discrepant), audio-only, and video-only presentations at various signal-to-noise levels. The results of Experiment 1 with 24 adult native speakers of English and 24 of Japanese supported previous reports of a weaker visual influence for Japanese participants. Experiment 2 was a short version of Experiment1 in which 16 Japanese and 14 English language 6-year-olds, and new groups of 24 Japanese and 24 English adults were tested. The results showed that the degree of visual influence was low but statistically equivalent for Japanese and English language 6-year-olds, and that there was a significant increase in visual influence over age for the English but not the Japanese language groups. Nevertheless, both the Japanese and English language groups showed an increase in speechreading performance (in the visual-only condition). It appears that the developmental increase of speechreading performance is related to the increase of the size of the visual influence in the English language participants, whereas such a straightforward relationship i s not the case for the Japanese participants.

Development of auditory-visual speech perception in English-speaking children: the role of language-specific factors
It has been found that auditory-visual speech perception differs over languages, particularly between English and Japanese speakers. This difference emerges due to increased use of visual information by English speakers between 6 and 8 years [14]. This study investigates the linguistic factors that may cause changes in auditory-visual speech perception development. Children aged between 5 and 8...
متن کاملImpact of language on functional connectivity for audiovisual speech integration
Visual information about lip and facial movements plays a role in audiovisual (AV) speech perception. Although this has been widely confirmed, previous behavioural studies have shown interlanguage differences, that is, native Japanese speakers do not integrate auditory and visual speech as closely as native English speakers. To elucidate the neural basis of such interlanguage differences, 22 na...
متن کاملImpact of language on audiovisual speech perception examined by fMRI
Both auditory and visual information plays an important role for audiovisual speech perception during face-to-face communication. Several behavioral studies have shown that native English speakers and native Japanese speakers behaved differently in audiovisual speech perception. We hypothesized that there would be differences in neural processing between native English speakers and native Japan...

The present study examined the extent to which visual form and timing information assisted in the perception of native English and Japanese-accented English speech in noise. We also examined whether the degree of visual facilitation would be mediated by the talkers’ English experience. Thirty native Australian English listeners performed a speech perception in noise task with English sentences ...
